What Can We Learn from Paul Walker’s Tragic Accident?

The Heartbreaking Story or Paul Walker’s Accident
In November 2013, Paul Walker tragically passed away in a serious car accident. The car accident was so violent that both Paul walker and Roger Rodas (the driver of the vehicle) were fatally injured almost instantly. The two men were on their way to a charity event when Roger Rodas lost control of the his 2005 Porsche, crashing into a concrete lamp post and some trees. Both men were still in the prime of their lives: Paul walker had recently turned 40 and Roger Rodas was only 38 years old. Their families lives were forever impacted by this unexpected tragedy and were certainly grieved to lose loved ones who had so much left to do in this world. While the story of this car accident is tragic, there is a lot that can be learned from the accident, and hopefully the knowledge will prevent future accidents.
The Danger of Travelling at High Speeds
Most of the time, hitting a stationary object is not going to result in a fatal car crash. However, when the car is travelling at high speeds, even what would be the most minor collision can become a very serious car crash. This is exactly what happened in Roger Rodas and Paul Walker’s case: it is estimated that Rodas was driving at around 80 to 90 miles per hour at the time of the collision. 80 to 90 miles per hour may not seem that fast—especially if you’re from Utah county—you are substantially more likely to lose control of your vehicle at those speeds. Furthermore, the street Rodas was driving down had a speed limit of 45 miles per hour. The road was simply not designed to accommodate drivers travelling at such high speeds. Speed limits are not random or arbitrary. There’s a reason that freeways and highways have higher speed limits where small towns and residential areas have lower speed limits. Many car crashes can be prevented by following speed limits.
The Importance of Maintaining a Vehicle
Forensics have theorized that the tires on Rodas’s car had contributed to the accident due to their age. It is extremely important to maintain your vehicle, not just for the convenience or luxury, but for safety reasons as well. Old tires are more likely to cause problems with stopping, especially when the tread has worn down significantly. When the tires are in poor condition, it can make it difficult to come to a complete stop in time. Having worn-down tires can also make it difficult to maintain control over your vehicle. Lastly, worn-down tires are more likely to go flat, especially at high speeds. Depending on what’s caused your flat, you may be at an increased risk for a blowout.
It Is Important to Follow Safety Guidelines
The location where the car was crashed was a popular drifting spot. While police do not believe that Roger Rodas was drag racing at the time of the accident, there is a possibility that he was drifting. A lot of people like to attempt things in cars such as drifting and donuts. While it may seem like harmless fun to do some of these things in parking lots or on unpopulated streets, it is extremely unsafe to do so. The reality is that people do lose control of their vehicles. Even if there was no abnormal driving at the time of the accident, that should just go to show how much more serious it could have been if drag racing or other abnormal driving practices were involved.
Liability and Lawsuits May Be Complicated
There were multiple lawsuits filed after the accident occurred. Paul Walker’s father had filed a wrongful death suit against Roger Rodas’s estate, and Paul Walker’s daughter did receive a settlement a couple years after Walker’s passing. Paul Walker’s family also tried to file a claim against Porsche, alleging design defects amongst other issues. When navigating something as serious as a death, it is important to seek legal representation when you’re considering filing a claim. An experienced wrongful death attorney can help you navigate the nuances of your personal injury claim as well as help provide legal support during this difficult time. If your loved one has been fatally injured in an accident, it may be a good idea to attend a free consultation with a personal injury attorney if you’re considering filing a claim.
Remembering Paul Walker and Roger Rodas
While most of us remember Paul Walker as the man who drove fast cars on the big screen, he was a human being who had a family. His parents, child, siblings, and other family members are all missing him deeply. Roger Rodas, the man who was thought to be driving at the time of the collision, was a race car driver who founded a charity to help orphans and widows in El Salvador. Roger Rodas also left behind a family; his wife and two children are undoubtedly still deeply affected by the loss of their loved one. While this accident was tragic, it was preventable. If you are driving on the roads, make sure that you’re doing your part to keep our roads safe so that no one has to endure a tragedy of this magnitude.
