Safety Tips for Losing Weight

If you’re attempting to lose some extra weight, it’s important that it’s done safely. With the increasingly popular fad diets advertised on sites like TikTok, there’s an increase in young people trying dangerous diets, unrealistic weight loss methods, and supplements that don’t work and aren’t FDA approved. At Moxie Law Group, we’d like to remind you that you’re perfect just the way you are. But if you’re going to lose a few pounds, it’s important that you do it in a safe way 

Speak to Your Doctor 

Speaking to your doctor before you engage in a new diet or exercise is a good way to reduce the chances of using dangerous or ineffective ways to lose weight. Depending on your circumstances, some diets may work better for you while others may not be as effective. For example, those who have a history of anorexia may need to be careful doing intermittent fasting as it can lead to an unhealthy relationship with food. People who are experiencing serious health complications due to obesity will likely benefit from a medical professional’s opinion since there may be a higher risk of complications and injuries for certain exercises and diets.  Ask your doctor about what diets and exercises are right for you. 

Be Careful with Fad Diets 

Everyone on TikTok is raving about how fast they’ve lost weight, but does it actually work? And, more importantly, is it safe? Over the past hundred years, dieting fads have ranged from silly to downright dangerous. In 2010, a professor made headlines after shedding nearly 30 eating pretty much nothing but twinkies and other snack cakes—an approach that may not work for everyone. On the more dangerous side of dieting, people have taken up smoking and some have even gone as far as purposely contracting parasites in order to lose weight. The aforementioned “diets” are very dangerous and should be avoided. If you’re trying a new diet, make sure you fully understand the benefits as well as the risks.  It’s probably a good idea to ask your doctor about any weight loss diet you’re planning on doing. 

Stay Safe at the Gym 

Going to the gym is a great place to get healthy but it can also be a great place to get injured. Make sure that you stay safe while you’re at the gym. Follow the gym’s rules while you’re there and make sure that you’re wearing proper shoes that will protect your feet, and clothing that will not catch on anything. If you’re lifting weights, it may be a good idea to do some research about how to lift weights correctly. When it comes to working out and lifting weights, don’t push yourself too hard. If a stretch hurts, or you’re really straining to lift a heavy weight, don’t push yourself too hard. While you may want to succeed quickly, pushing yourself past your limits may cause you to sustain injuries that could set you back in your fitness goals. 

Research Supplements 

Not only can researching supplements help you avoid getting scammed by taking supplements that don’t actually work, research can also help you avoid taking supplements that are dangerous. There are lots of diet pills out there that boast amazing claims, and some of these have even been linked to cancer and death. If you’re considering losing weight with the help of diet pills, make sure you get your doctor’s recommendation on which pills to take. Supplements don’t need to be FDA approved in order to be sold, so you shouldn’t assume that it’s safe or effective just because you can purchase it at the grocery store. Furthermore, a lot of supplements use words like “organic” and “natural” in order to make consumers believe that the supplement is safe. But just because something is natural does not mean that it’s safe to consume or effective. 

Take a Break If You’re Injured 

If you sustain an injury or become sick, make sure that you take a break from working out. Not only can strenuous exercise make your injuries worse, they can also make the recovery time longer. In some cases, it may be necessary to seek medical attention for your injuries in order to heal faster.
