Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is a favorite holiday for many people. However, it’s also an occasion for people to become seriously injured. If you’re planning on engaging in some of the Halloween festivities, make sure that you’re following these safety tips to prevent injury.
Be Careful Carving the Pumpkin!
If you’re carving a pumpkin, it’s a good idea to practice safe pumpkin carving techniques. It may help to check out a few videos on YouTube before you begin carving the pumpkin, especially if you’ve never done it before. If you have children who are participating, it’s important that they do not do any of the carving unless they’re old enough to handle a knife. Painting the pumpkins may be a safer activity for children who are too young to handle knives. If you’ve refrained from carving pumpkins, but you’ve left them out on your doorstep for decoration, they may be able to be carved and made into pumpkin goodies after Halloween is over. But make sure that the pumpkin isn’t rotting before you make pumpkin treats out of it. If a pumpkin is leaking fluids, or the bottom of the pumpkin is caving in, it’s probably time to throw the pumpkin out.
Make Sure Your Halloween Costume Is Safe
If you’re going trick or treating this year, make sure your Halloween costume is safe. Make sure you’re wearing shoes that are going to be comfortable to walk in, and will not cause a tripping hazard. Speaking of tripping hazards, it’s important that your costume isn’t too long, or you may trip over it. Those who are wearing masks should make sure that they can see clearly out of the mask in all directions. Parents of children with sensitive skin should check the ingredients of any face paints or cosmetic products to ensure that their child isn’t allergic to anything. Depending on the event you’re going to, it may be a good idea to be careful with fake weapons, they may not be allowed, or they may cause others to feel uncomfortable. Bug spray may also be needed in certain areas.
Watch Out for Kids
When driving through neighborhoods on Halloween, it’s a good idea to make sure that you’re watching out for children. Children may be walking in the street or crossing unpredictably. Make sure you’ve got your headlights on, and that you’re driving slowly through residential areas. In some neighborhoods, trick-or-treaters come out on the Friday and Saturday before Halloween to trick-or-treat when the holiday is on a weeknight. On these days, it’s important to take extra precautions when driving through a neighborhood.
Don’t Drink and Drive
Drinking and driving isn’t just scary; it’s deadly. If you’re recreationally using drugs, please do not get behind the wheel. If you’re attending a Halloween party, don’t drink and drive. In order to avoid drinking and driving, it’s a good idea for you to make plans for the journey home before you start drinking. If you weren’t planning on drinking, and you do end up having a few drinks, make sure that you get an Uber instead of getting behind the wheel. If you’re hosting a get-together or party, inviting your friends to crash at your place may be a good idea if they’re too drunk to drive home. Remember, there are likely many children walking around the streets on Halloween. If you drink and drive, there’s a higher than likely chance that you could injure or kill a child who’s trick-or-treating. Don’t drink and drive.
Keep Your Yard Safe
Did you know that you could be liable for injuries that occur on your property? You can reduce the chances of injury and liability by making sure your porch is well lit, and the walkways are free of hazards. Those darn kids don’t always care about walking your lawn, and sometimes they’ll cut across it without a second thought. If you have sprinklers or objects on your lawn, it’s a good idea to remove them so that children do not trips. Make sure that none of your decorations pose any hazards toward children who may want to play on them.
