At-Home Spa Safety

ELI5: Negligence

Prices continue to go up. Just ten years ago you may have been able to get your eyebrows waxed, hair cut, and nails done for around $100. In 2023, the average price of a manicure can range from $25 all the way up to $75, depending on what kind of manicure the client gets. These prices have driven people to take a do-it-yourself approach to spa care. If you’re taking the do-it-yourself approach, make sure that you’re following these safety tips.

Watch out for the Wax

With great power comes great responsibility–especially when it comes to do-it-yourself waxing.

When you go into a spa for wax, they may use different types of wax for different body parts and different hair. The wax they’re using on your eyebrows may not be the same wax they’re using on your legs. Furthermore, the temperature and application of the wax is going to vary depending on what kind of wax you’re using, and maybe even where you’re using the wax.

It’s always a good idea to check the temperature of the wax before you use it. It’s also a good idea to make sure that it’s approved for use in the area  you’re using it in. Areas such as the face or genitals may be more sensitive than an area like the leg.

Check the Ingredients

It’s always a good idea to check the ingredients of the products you’re using, especially if you haven’t used them before. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, it’s always a good idea to consider this and check the ingredients before using the product. If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort while using a product, it may be a good idea to discontinue use immediately.

Many blogs have recipes for scrubs, face masks, and bath bombs that you can make at home. If you’re doing this, make sure that the ingredients you’re using are actually safe, and able to be used in the manner in which you’re using them. Young children tend to have more sensitive skin, so it may be a good idea to take extra precautions before making DIY products for your children.

Use as Intended

There’s always a risk when you’re using a product in a way that differs from its intended use. A disturbing trend swept the internet not too long ago; influencers were positively raving about the benefits of using unused cat litter as part of a homemade face mask recipe. Though you can still find recipes for cat litter face masks online, experts warn that putting cat litter on your face isn’t safe, and should not be used in face masks. When you’re using products for your at-home spa, make sure that you’re always using them as they’re intended to be used. Some products weren’t meant to be used daily or even weekly. So make sure that you’re not using a product too often.

Follow the Instructions

It’s never a bad idea to read the instructions all the way through before you begin using a product. Many masks and similar treatments will tell users how long to leave the mask on. In many cases, there’s no harm in leaving the mask on for too long. However, in some cases, you can cause some serious damage by leaving the product on for too long. For example, many foot masks utilize a chemical reaction to make dead skin peel off of the foot. Unfortunately, if there are no calluses to peel off, the foot mask can actually cause chemical burns. These masks may also cause chemical burns if left on too long. If you’re bleaching your hair, it’s also important to follow the instructions and keep an eye out for any discomfort, as you can get chemical burns from bleaching your hair as well.

Maybe Leave It to the Professionals

Depending on what you’re doing, it may be a good idea to leave some spa treatments to the professionals, especially when you’re thinking about procedures that could have big consequences if they go wrong. Before going to a spa for a procedure, it’s always a good idea to do some research on the spa and the qualifications of the employees. Usually, spas require their employees to have certain training, certifications, and/or education before they allow their employees to perform services on clients. If you’re going to a spa for a treatment, it may be a good idea to do some research on the spa.

Leave Your Claim to the Professionals

If you’ve been injured due to the negligence of another person, the professionals at Moxie Law Group can help you get the compensation you deserve. Much like do-it-yourself spas, a lot of people like to take a do-it-yourself approach to handling their injury claim. However, if you’ve been injured, you should always meet with a personal injury attorney for a free consultation. Those who hire an attorney to handle their claim tend to get more compensation than those who did not. If you have been injured, contact Moxie Law Group today to schedule your free consultation.
