Staying Safe During Football Season
ELI5: Negligence

Get your nachos, get your wings, get your dip, and get in front of the couch: football season is almost here. But before you plop down in front of the game, make sure that this season is a safe one. The summer season keeps personal injury attorneys busy with car accident cases and outdoor injuries—but personal injury lawyers aren’t getting a break in the fall either. From Halloween, to football season, to Christmas, the holiday season provides people with plenty of opportunities to get hurt, thus plenty of work for personal injury attorneys. At Moxie Law Group, our goal is to provide our community with the education, and resources they need in order to avoid calling our firm.

Please Drink Responsibly

If you’re consuming alcohol, please drink responsibly. Drinking responsibly means that you don’t drive a car after you’ve ingested alcohol. A lot of people believe that they can tell whether or not they’re too impaired to drive. However, a lot of different factors can affect the level of impairment a person has from just one drink. For this reason, it’s best to take all guesswork out of it and avoid driving any time you’ve had alcohol. Even if you don’t drink, you could be liable if you’re serving alcohol and you allow your friend to have too much and then drive home drunk. You can reduce your liability here by allowing your intoxicated friends to “crash” at your place while they’re sobering up, offering to call a cab for them, or otherwise discouraging drunk driving so they don’t actually crash and hurt themselves or someone else on the road..

Drive Responsibly Too

Got plans to drive all the way to a stadium in Las Vegas or Denver? If you’re hoping to see your favorite team in person, make sure you have a safe drive down there. Though Las Vegas doesn’t see a lot of snow, you’ll definitely see a lot of snow on the drive down there. And, if you’re going to Denver, you will especially see a lot of snow if you drive through Wyoming. If you’ve got a road trip planned, make sure your car is all set for the winter weather. Although you want all of your car to be ready for a winter road trip, you especially need to make sure you’ve got the right tires. Having a first aid kit too is important. Make sure you’ve got a shovel in case you need to dig your car out of a snow bank.

Make Sure Your Hot Wings Aren’t too Hot

Make sure your hot wings aren’t too hot—and we’re talking about the temperature, not the spice. It’s also a good idea to make sure all of your food has been thoroughly cooked, and that you’ve used proper food handling techniques. For example, don’t leave food out for too long, and be sure to quickly refrigerate any leftover food. If you know your friends have food allergies, warn them ahead of time of any dishes that may contain allergens that would affect them. If there are people at your home whom you do not know, you may decide to put a note beside dishes containing common allergens such as peanuts or wheat. This is especially true when the allergen isn’t visible, or obvious. For example, most people would assume your candied pecans are gluten free.

If You’re Playing Football

If you’re playing football this season, make sure you’ve got the right protective gear. Football is known to cause concussions, which can lead to cognitive impairment later in life. For this reason, you should always wear a helmet while you’re playing football. If you become injured during a game, it’s important to stop playing until your injury is healed. Do not attempt to rush the healing process, or push yourself past what you can endure. If your children are playing football, make sure they have all the right protective gear. Do not allow them to play football unsupervised. Serious injuries can occur while playing football. Therefore, it’s best to have an adult around to ensure all injuries are properly dealt with.
