Safety Tips for Swimming

ELI5: Negligence

FOLLOW THESE TIPS FROM A SWIMMING POOL ACCIDENT ATTORNEY

With COVID cases finally starting to stabilize, and the weather heating up, you and your family are probably ready to start going to waterparks. However, your summer plans likely don’t include looking for a drowning accident lawyer. If you’re looking to avoid swimming accidents, and you should be, it’s important that you take the necessary safety precautions to keep yourself and your family safe. According to the CDC, each day an average of 11 people will drown to their death, and an additional 22 people will experience a non-fatal drowning. And children have an increased risk of drowning to death. If you’re looking to avoid searching for a drowning accident lawyer this summer, make sure you’re following all the safety tips to prevent accidents.

PAY ATTENTION TO THE WATER DEPTH – PERSONAL INJURY POOL

If you’re ready to jump in the pool, make sure to take notice of how deep the water is. Most pools have markings on the sides of the pool to tell visitors how deep the water is. If the water is too shallow, the pool should have signs warning guests not to dive into that area of the pool. Diving head-first into water that’s less than eight feet deep is not recommended. If you’re unsure of whether or not it’s safe to dive headfirst into the water, it may be a good idea to play it safe and refrain from diving. Also, if you’re not sure about your ability to swim, do not swim in water that goes past your neck.

FOLLOW THE RULES

Many swimming pools have signs asking their patrons to refrain from running. If you’re looking to prevent injuries, make sure you don’t run in areas that could have lots of water. Though it may not seem like it, a slip and fall can result in a serious injury, and since there are a lot of puddles of water on the ground at water parks, there may be an increased risk of slip and falls–especially in locker rooms. Also, if a swimming pool doesn’t allow you to have your friends on your shoulders, or stand on top of floatation devices, or do other dangerous things, you should refrain from doing them. Rules are there for a reason. Depending on the circumstances, a drowning accident lawyer may not be able to help you if you’re injured because you’re not following the rules.

DON’T FORGET FLOATATION DEVICES- PERSONAL INJURY POOL

If you have small children, or family members who are inexperienced in swimming, it may be a good idea to have flotation devices. Remember, not all flotation devices are created equally. While floating loungers provide relaxation and amusement, they were not designed to save lives or prevent drowning. If you have a loved one who needs a personal flotation device, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the different types of floatation devices available. By doing this, you can pick the floatation device that’s right for your circumstances. If youre swimming in your backyard, you can reduce calls to a drowning accident lawyer by having a floatation device, such as a lifesaver ring, that can be thrown out into the pool in emergencies.

WATCHING OUT FOR DROWNING

A lot of people have an idea of what drowning looks like…and that idea is frequently wrong. Drowning isn’t usually a big spectacle full of splashing and screaming. In fact, it can actually be easy to miss a person who’s drowning. Those who are drowning typically cannot scream for help. The water is often at the mouth level and their head may be tilted back as they gasp for air. Many people who are drowning are in vertical positions with their arms and legs below the surface attempting to tread water. They may not realize the seriousness of their situation or may be too tired or too desperate to keep from going under to raise a hand and signal for help. Though lifeguards are supposed to be watching for this, there are times when they could miss it. When you take your family swimming, make sure that you’re keeping an eye on your children, just in case a lifeguard isn’t watching them. If they look uncomfortable or worried or are having trouble keeping their head above water, it may be time to get them some help.

DON’T DRINK AND SWIM

If you’re going swimming this summer, and you’re planning on ingesting alcohol, you may want to wait until you’re finished swimming before drinking. Swimming while under the influence can increase your risk of drowning substantially. Depending on how much alcohol you’ve had, you may be at risk for passing out while you’re in the pool. Also, alcohol can cause you to become dehydrated, which can be hard to recognize when you’re in the water. If you become dehydrated while swimming, you may struggle to pull yourself out of the water or swim to the stairs. Lastly, while under the influence of alcohol, you may have impaired judgment. This could cause you to engage in risky behavior that you wouldn’t normally engage in. Therefore, it’s always advisable to keep alcohol and swimming separately.
