Staying Safe on Halloween

ELI5: Negligence

The air is getting crispy, the leaves are getting crunchy, and the candy is filling the grocery store shelves. So we all know that Utah’s spooky season is coming up. Children are excited because of candy, teens are excited about dressing up, adults are excited about parties, and personal injury attorneys are preparing for the overwhelming amount of lawsuits. From catastrophic pumpkin carving injuries, to haunted house injuries, an injury can happen anytime, anywhere, and faster than you can say, “Salt Lake City personal injury lawyer near me.”

AVOID WARDROBE MALFUNCTIONS

Lots of super cool Halloween costumes come with some pretty interesting footwear. While a pair of shoes can make your costume extra spooky, they can also make your injuries extra scary too. If you’re planning on going trick-or-treating, you might want to make sure you can comfortably walk in your spooky shoes, especially when you’re going over dark and unfamiliar sidewalks. You will also need to make sure your costume isn’t long enough for you to trip over. Over Halloween, personal injury firms see a lot of trips, slips, and falls. While these sound minor, they can be devastatingly painful. Make sure your shoes are good for walking long distances and your costume isn’t going to cause you to trip. Be especially careful going up or down stairs. Also, make sure you can properly see out of any masks you or your child is wearing.

STAY IN WELL-LIT AREAS

If you’re taking your child trick-or-treating, make sure to stick to well-lit areas where you’re less likely to trip over sinkholes, cracks in the sidewalk, or other hazardous land formations. When walking up to a neighbor’s property, make sure you stay in the well-lit areas and on the pavement; you never know if there’s some plants or decorations in the lawn you could trip over. There also could be things in neighbors’ yards and sidewalks that you could hurt yourself by stepping on. The best way to stay safe is to carry a flashlight when you take your kids trick-or-treating.

AVOID DRUNK DRIVERS – CALL A HALLOWEEN LAWYER

Are you looking for the best car accident lawyer in Salt Lake City? Victims of your negligence will be if you decide to drink and drive. A lot of people decide to spend the haunted holiday consuming alcohol. But problems occur when people get behind the wheel after a few drinks. If you’re concerned about drunk drivers on Halloween, the best thing you can do is stay off the road, especially late at night. Make sure your children are in well-lit areas and aren’t wearing masks or headphones that may inhibit their ability to hear or see cars. Trunk-or-treating may be a really fun alternative to door to door trick-or-treating.

WATCH OUT FOR PEDESTRIANS

Halloween can be a source of danger to pedestrians as well. Wearing reflective clothing, glow sticks, or clip-on lights can help drivers see you at night. You could also carry a flashlight while you’re walking through the streets. If you’re driving through neighborhoods, drive a little slower on Halloween. Make sure your headlights are on and that you’re looking out for pedestrians. There will be a lot of people wearing dark clothing, and some may be wearing all black. Be on the lookout for children on the sidewalks as well; the younger children may run into the streets unexpectedly and without looking.

CHECK YOUR KIDS’ CANDY

Make sure to check your children’s candy before they dig in. Though most people don’t pass out homemade goodies anymore, you should still check to make sure there’s nothing homemade in your child’s bounty. You’ll also want to make sure there’s nothing in there that your child is allergic to, especially if they have peanut allergies, gluten intolerance, or other dietary sensitivities. We also recommend taking a few pieces of candy—preferably the best ones—and doing a taste test just to make sure it’s really candy. Plus, if you took your kids trick-or-treating to keep them safe, you deserve a commission.
