In order to promote safety during the summer, Zero Fatalities has come up with a campaign to encourage drivers to develop safe habits. This is because, each summer, Utah sees a sharp increase in fatalities on the road. During Utah’s 100 Deadliest Days, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, an estimated one person will die on Utah’s roads everyday. In 2020, a total of 276 people were fatally injured in accidents, and 101 of those fatalities took place during Utah’s 100 Deadliest Days.
WHY ARE SUMMERS SO DEADLY?
We aren’t entirely certain why summers on Utah’s roads are so deadly, but we do have a few theories. Drivers tend to drive faster when the roads are dry and there are no weather hazards. Summer also marks an ideal time to go on road trips and camping trips so, with more people on the roads, more accidents are likely to occur. Additionally, teenagers are out of school for the summer so there are more inexperienced drivers on the roads who may not be able to drive as defensively as others. Finally, more people are celebrating the summer holidays with alcohol, which can lead to an increase in driving under the influence.

Utah’s 100 Deadliest Days in 2021
Compared to last year, Utah has not seen much of an improvement when it comes to fatalities on the road. Tragically, 207 people have already been fatally injured in car crashes this year, and over 1,000 people have been severely injured. Though fewer lives were lost during this summer season, many families are still without their loved ones. From June 2021 to the beginning of September 2021, 311 crashes occured from alcohol alone—and that number doesn’t even include the accidents where alcohol was suspected. Though fewer people have been killed during Utah’s 100 Deadliest Days in 2021, we still have a long way to go to reduce our summer road fatalities.
YOU CAN HELP DECREASE UTAH’S CAR ACCIDENTS
Zero Fatalities is committed to promoting safety tips with the goal of having zero fatalities on Utah’s roads. On Labor Day weekend of 2021, six people were tragically killed in Utah alone due to car accidents. Now six families are coping with the loss of a loved one. We all need to work together to reach the goal of zero fatalities. You can help decrease motor vehicle accidents by refraining from impaired driving such as, distracted driving or driving under the influence. Since rates of speeding tend to go up in the summer, following the speed limits and avoiding aggressive driving could also help keep the fatalities down. If we make safety a priority, we could significantly reduce the amount of lives lost every year during Utah’s 100 Deadliest Days.
